Ever since Carlotta and Sharon have been watching a scary film to prepare for the reading competition, creepy things have been happening: Sharon suddenly manages to read just fine (magic!), Carlotta's mother hurts her foot on Friday the 13th and Carlotta and her siblings are forced to move in with their grandparents for a few days. A bizarre black cat has recently been living with them and Sharon and Carlotta meet other scary figures everywhere. Bad luck follows them! And for once not even Carlotta's Indian flute can do anything about it...
